One thing you should know about me is I'm a chocoholic. There are particular times in my life that I've been in the recovery stages, that I've tried to avoid it, and other times like right now that I am full on embracing it. I was scrolling through some of my saved Pinterest recipes and I ran across this salted caramel brownie recipe that looked realllllly tempting. So, let's make some homemade brownies!
Just to be clear, this is not my own recipe. Here's the link if you want a more detailed explanation of this recipe: https://pin.it/LnZ0O7H
I did everything pretty much according to the recipe. I usually tweak things to add my own twist, but honestly, this one didn't really need much adjusting. It's a very solid recipe. The only thing I added was more chocolate chips! One important thing about making homemade brownies is buying quality ingredients. The only ingredients you really have to worry about here are the semi-sweet chocolate, cocoa powder, and the caramel topping. If you wanna go all-out homemade, you can make your own caramel sauce to go on top, which is included in the link above. But for me, I was in a time-crunch, as I made these for a Super Bowl party the day of, so I used Mrs Richardsons Caramel Dessert Sauce. For the cocoa powder, I prefer Hersheys Cocoa powder because it's also decently affordable and tastes really good. For the semi-sweet chocolate chips, really any brand will do, although some bakers would argue with me. It's just important that they are semi-sweet so that there's a nice balance of flavor and your brownies won't come out too sweet. But hey, maybe for you, it can never be too sweet. It's whatever your preference is really. On a side note, I also like to use my stand mixer—no real reason why, it's just easier and less work for me!
Here's a list of ingredients:
- 1 cup butter
- 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- approximately 10 ounces caramel sauce
- flaked sea salt
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9x9 baking dish.
- Melt the butter and 4 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate in the microwave. Stir and let cool slightly.
- Pour the butter and chocolate mixture into a large bowl and add the sugar and eggs. Mix until well incorporated.
- Add the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix well but do not over-mix.
- Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
- Spread the batter evenly in your prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out mostly clean (Note: For a convection oven, it takes more like 20-25 minutes).
- Let brownies cool completely before topping with caramel sauce and a sprinkling of sea salt (Note: Put your caramel sauce in the microwave for about thirty seconds so that it's easier to spread on the brownies).
That's it! Easy peasy! Here's what the brownies looked like pre-oven and then the end result!
Usually when I make recipes for the first time, they are okay, not the best. But these...let's just say there were no leftovers after the party! These brownies are definitely a guaranteed hit at any party or gathering, or just by yourself at home!
